Dear Future Self..

Shoot your shot always! Most of business is about relationships, never underestimate the power of just telling people what you want..

Tell us a bit about what you do?

Management consultant at PwC for 4 years

How have you been able to navigate your career as a Black woman in Britain?

To me, navigating my career as a black woman has meant accepting I will stand out in rooms for being both a woman and black but making sure I stand out for the right reasons. How can I make good first impressions and showcase that I know my stuff!

What is one of the biggest challenges you've faced in your life or career and how did you overcome it?

My biggest challenge has been myself mostly. I can look back and anytime I doubted myself and my abilities I was holding myself back. When I started to feel the fear and do it anyway and relinquished imposter syndrome I started to feel much better. A lot of my confidence came from realising, its so freeing to not care what others will think!

Do you have any practical tips for girls/women interested in pursuing a career in your particular field?

Yes I would say consulting is a great career if like me you are naturally interested and intrigued by businesses and how they operate and face difficult challenges. It is a varied, interesting and dynamic career path. My key piece of advice is to try and get work experience as early on as you can. Follow a trial and error method so that you can tick things off that you do like and cross out what you don’t. You won’t know till you try!

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?

I love the chinese proverb that says ‘the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now’. Seize the day and live with no regrets or what ifs!

Our future starts now - with your experiences and everything you now know - what would you tell your future self?
